今日は12月について話したいと思います。

今日のキーワードは「〜なくてはいけません」「〜なくてもいいです」です。
Today’s key grammar is “must / have to” and “don’t have to / it’s okay not to.”
12月、何をしなくてはいけませんか？
In December, what do you have to do?
大掃除をしなくてはいけません。
I have to do the big year-end cleaning.
大掃除って、いつもしないところを掃除することですね。
“Ōsōji” means cleaning places you normally don’t clean.
例えば、換気扇とか。
For example, the ventilation fan.
お風呂の天井とか。
And the bathroom ceiling.
上の方とか、普段絶対触らないところですね。
Places up high that you usually never touch.
冷蔵庫の中とかもありますね。
Inside the refrigerator too.
オーストラリアに住んでいても、12月に大掃除しますか？
Do you still do year-end cleaning even when you live in Australia?
別にしないんですけど…

どうして日本では12月じゃなくてはいけないんでしょう？
Why do Japanese people have to do it in December?
新年を気持ちよく迎えるためです。
To welcome the New Year feeling refreshed.
だから12月はしなくてはいけないことが多いですね。
That’s why there are many things we must do in December.
でもその前にクリスマスもありますよね。
But before that, there’s Christmas.
日本ではクリスマスを祝いますか？
Do people in Japan celebrate Christmas?
祝っている感じはあまりないですよね。
It doesn’t really feel like we “celebrate,” does it?
どちらかというとパーティーをする感じですよね。
It’s more like having a party.
子どもがいる家だと、サンタクロースをしなくてはいけないですよね。

プレゼントを用意しなくてはいけません。

保育園や幼稚園もサンタの話をするから、家でも続けないといけないですよね。

違います。
No, they don’t.
でもこれはちょっと難しいですね。「祝う」という言葉がね…。
But this is a little tricky. The word “iwau” (to celebrate) is the issue…
日本語では「クリスマスを祝う」とはあまり言いません。
In Japanese, we don’t often say “celebrate Christmas.”
祝うという言葉がどんな意味かを教えるのは日本語教師の仕事なので…。
Explaining the nuance of “iwau” is part of a Japanese teacher’s job…
この場面では「祝う」は使わない言葉なんです。
In this context, “iwau” is not the right word.
クリスマスはイベントを楽しむ感じです。
Christmas is more like enjoying an event.
楽しむ人もいますが、「おめでとう」みたいにはならないんですよ。
Some people enjoy it, but it’s not like saying “Congratulations.”
クリスマスだから楽しいことをしよう、という感じです。
It’s more like “Let’s do something fun because it’s Christmas.”
KFCもクリスマスのデコレーションをしたりして売っていますよね。
KFC decorates and sells chicken for Christmas too.
日本人でもキリスト教徒の人はいます。
There are Japanese Christians, of course.
でもキリスト教徒じゃない人は祝わないです。
But people who aren’t Christian don’t “celebrate” it.
イベントとして楽しむ人はいますが、みんなではないです。
Some people enjoy it as an event, but not everyone.
普通に仕事もするし、普通の日という人も多いです。
Many people just work and treat it like a normal day.
でもなぜかクリスマスケーキは大好きです。
But for some reason, they love Christmas cake.

日本で過ごします。
She will spend it in Japan.

今日は12月、クリスマス、大掃除について話しました。
Today we talked about December, Christmas, and ōsōji.
もう一つだけ。最後にキーワードです。
One more keyword before we finish.
大掃除をした後、一年の最後の日のことを「大みそか」と言います。
After the big cleaning, the last day of the year is called “Ōmisoka.”
1年の最後の日なので「大きい」という字を使います。
Because it’s the biggest final day of the year, we use the kanji for “big.”
ちなみにドイツ語ではジルベスターと言います。
By the way, in German it’s called Silvester.
英語ではニューイヤーズイブですね。
In English, it’s New Year’s Eve.
