Let’s Practice Japanese Pronunciation with Scripts vol.1: Genki I Grammar

Here is the Playlist of my project “Let’s Learn Japanese From Short Scripts.”

How to practice
  • Firstly, read the scripts, check all unfamiliar words, and understand the context.
  • Listen to the audio without seeing the script
  • Shadow the audio while listening to the audio
  • Practice the same material every day ideally 15-min for a week
  • Please record and listen to your shadowing audio on the fifth day and later.
  • Work on it only for one week so that it would not be boring you much.
Please do Shadowing, NOT Overlapping
  • Shadowing: follow the original audio without looking at the script and pronounce it with a 1-3 seconds delay.
    • It enables you to focus on listening to the audio as well as impedes you from reading the script.
  • Overlapping: pronounce the original script with/without looking at it without a delay.
    • It lets you focus on reading the script rather than listening to what you hear.
How to build a habit
  • Find a time for practice at the same time of the day
  • Begin practicing for 5-min every day.
  • Increase up until 15-min.

💡Long vowels in Japanese: when the same vowel is placed one right after the other, the pronunciation of each vowel should be as long as other single vowels, however, the pronunciation of Japanese learners tends to end up being shorter than two single vowels. Instead of prolonging or stretching the sound, focus on clearly articulating each vowel individually. This is particularly important when two same vowels are pronounced at different pitch levels.

💡The transcribing rule for Hiragana words is as follows, while that of Katakana words is usually done by adding a long vowel symbol, ăƒŒ.

💡As it appears in the script, the representation of a vowel may sometimes be in a small size of the letter representing the vowel, such as あぁ, use the long vowel symbol, such as ăžăƒŒ, or follow the hiragana’s rule such as じゃあ and そう, depending on the writer’s preference.

Colloquially どいるform’s い often gets omitted. Please compare あずみさん and メケăƒȘăƒŒă•ă‚“’s remarks. あずみさん sticks to using ăŠăŸă›ă‚“ on the contrary メケăƒȘăƒŒă•ă‚“ sticks to using basic ăŠă„ăŸă›ă‚“. This is あずみさん’s intention to make her speech friendlier to メケăƒȘăƒŒă•ă‚“ even though they use formal (long form) speech here. This frequently happens when people want to have a conversation that sounds not that formal and distanced. Needless to say, it is a prerequisite in casual speech. You can find more explanation here.
