Ch.2 The Swamp of Commitment

Grasp the structure🪂

To grasp the chapter, you just try to see its hierarchical configuration. I strongly recommend drawing it either physically or virtually.

War of attrition
  • defensive
  • rather than getting points, they prefer to wear down the opponent and eat up time.
  • playing not to loss, avoiding losses.
Fun-n-Gun approach
  • ofensive, aggressive.
  • try to score with more touch down.
  • dominate the conference by playing to win.

characteristics
  • It is difficult to change a plan.
  • It brings about exuberant optimism when it is merged with loss aversion.
  • It is required to have the courage to abandon your previous commitment.
  • It makes you be suseptible to blind the cost of delaying failure.
Examples for the pull of commitment
  • 1. Harvard Business School
    • Max Bazerman’s negotiation class.
    • It is difficult to let go even when things clearly aren’t working.
    • When people become commited not to lose, a bill of $20 can be more than $20 because both two people grow their aversion of loss.
    • Staying the same opinion because of a past commitment hurts both two of them.
  • 2. The Vietnam War
    • Lyndon B. Johnson wanted to stop the spread of communism in south east Asia.
    • “Light at the end of the tunnel, hell, we don’t even have a tunnel; we don’t even have a tunnel; we don’t even know where the tunnel is.”
    • Johnson was swayed in his decision.
    • The convergence of the two undercurrents, loss aversion and pull of commitment, bring about exuberant optimism.
    • With the loss aversion and the force of commitment, you are susceptible to be swayed from acknowledging the cost of delaying failure.

Summarize the chapter concisely🪂

To summarize, check the hierarchical configuration and make sentences with important points of each.

When people invest their time, work, and so forth, it makes them difficult to change their plans. It is called the pull of commitment. Furthermore, when it merges with loss aversion, it brings about exuberant optimism. Consequently, it makes them be susceptible to be swayed from acknowledging the cost of delaying failure. This was the reason why did Steve Spurrier lead the University of Florida to the champion as well as why was Lydon B. Johnson swayed from the rational decision-making regarding the Vietnam War.

Interpretive question

What does it mean? How are the parts connected? what is the reason for people’s actions?

There is more than one possible answer, but the viewer’s opinion is based directly on the text.

My opinion: In chapter 1, it was described how did captain Van Zanten grow loss aversion at the risk of safety. In chapter 2, the pull of commitment explains that he commit so much to his work and his reputation was on the line. The attempt to leave the island made him swayed from the cost of sticking to the plan. Moreover, since his loss aversion merged with it, it brought about exuberant optimism and made him swayed from the risk of safety and determined to take off without permission.

Expressions and terms🪂

Pick some terms that you are unfamiliar with from sentences you high-lightened and memorize them because you need them to discuss this chapter!!

How did you like chapter 2? Do you think the pull of commitment is a powerful psychological force that can sway us from a rational decision?

Considering the social commitment, such as job employment or marriage, it can become the typical reason not to quit something. The most important thing we need to keep in mind is that it sways us from acknowledging the cost of the delaying decision. The choice of changing a plan and the choice of sticking to the original plan have both risks.
